DEXiAF

Tool for Characterizing and Evaluating Agroforestry Systems

DEXiAF is a free software tool co-developed by INRAE, GRAB, and UniLaSalle Beauvais, designed for field actors and trainers to:

•    Finalize your agroforestry system prototype using a comprehensive checklist
•    Evaluate your agroforestry system before planting, on the three pillars of sustainability in a given context

DEXiAF Tool 1

Based on DEXi technology, DEXiAF integrates both expert knowledge and multiple references, including those from MASC, INDIGO methods, or derived from LCA. It took 10 years to develop. To learn more about DEXi-type tools.

Why the DEXiAF Tool?

Agroforestry systems (AFS) are complex, yet offer significant ecological and economic benefits. The combination of trees with annual productions generates a multitude of interactions between biological, physical, and human elements, which evolve over time and according to environmental conditions. The design phase is crucial to understand this complexity, meet the project owner's expectations, and ensure the feasibility of the system.
Designing a desirable and achievable agroforestry system involves considering all environmental, economic, and social dimensions of the future agroforestry system, as well as conducting a multi-criteria evaluation of its sustainability. This is what the DEXiAF tool enables.

DEXiAF: Required Data and Results Produced

A multiple-choice list of 87 criteria needs to be filled out:

  • Contextual elements of the farm
  • Layout and composition of the AFS
  • Cultural practices and inputs
  • Overall and detailed evaluation
  • Identification of strengths and weaknesses
  • A support tool for discussion and facilitation

How to Use DEXiAF

Prerequisite: A plot or small farm with an agroforestry project

  1. Install the DEXi software
  2. Download the DEXiAF model and open it in DEXi (DEXiAF package)
  3. Characterize and finalize the AFS
  4. Evaluate the prototype in DEXi
  5. Generate the synoptic chart with the Excel file VISU (DEXiAF package)
  6. Improve the AFS and re-evaluate before implementation
